Here goes!<\/p>\n<p>A well-worn much-thumbed-through book in my library is <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.press.uchicago.edu\/ucp\/books\/book\/chicago\/G\/bo3639725.html\">Greek Lyrics<\/a> <\/em>translated by Richmond Lattimore. Lattimore is best known for his translations of the<em> Iliad<\/em> and the <em>Odyssey<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s one of my favorite lyrics (with an appearance by Aphrodite) from that collection by <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ibycus\">Ibycus<\/a>:<\/p>\n<p>In spring time the Kydonian<br \/>\nquinces, watered by running streams,<br \/>\nthere where the maiden nymphs have<br \/>\ntheir secret garden, and grapes that grow<br \/>\nround in shade of the tendriled vine,<br \/>\nripen.<br \/>\nNow in this season for me<br \/>\nthere is no rest from love.<br \/>\nOut of the hard bright sky,<br \/>\nA Thracian north wind blowing<br \/>\nwith searing rages and hurt &#8211; &#8211; dark,<br \/>\npitiliess, sent by Aphrodite &#8211; &#8211; Love<br \/>\nrocks and tosses my heart.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Though I&#8217;m getting a late start jumping on the April-is-National-Poetry-Month wagon, my plan is to post poetry for the rest of the month of April.
