Sylvia Plath’s birthday. Also on this day thirty-two years ago I left home and landed in Seattle with little money, my notebook, and no plan except to meet interesting people and write poetry.<\/p>\n

In honor of Plath’s birthday and in honor of Seattle, a truly mycological wonderland, here’s her amazing poem called “Mushrooms,” written\/published in 1959.<\/p>\n

MUSHROOMS<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

“Overnight, very
\nWhitely, discreetly,
\nVery quietly<\/p>\n

Our toes, our noses
\nTake hold on the loam,
\nAcquire the air.<\/p>\n

Nobody sees us,
\nStops us, betrays us;
\nThe small grains make room.<\/p>\n

Soft fists insist on
\nHeaving the needles,
\nThe leafy bedding,<\/p>\n

Even the paving.
\nOur hammers, our rams,
\nEarless and eyeless,<\/p>\n

Perfectly voiceless,
\nWiden the crannies,
\nShoulder through holes. We<\/p>\n

Diet on water,
\nOn crumbs of shadow,
\nBland-mannered, asking<\/p>\n

Little or nothing.
\nSo many of us!
\nSo many of us!<\/p>\n

We are shelves, we are
\nTables, we are meek,
\nWe are edible,<\/p>\n

Nudgers and shovers
\nIn spite of ourselves.
